About
Samantha is a professional hand embroidery artist. She applies her craft to creating custom-made projects for private commissions and presidential flags for the US government. She holds a BFA degree in Illustration, this background in drawing and composition informs the foundations of her embroidered work.
Samantha is inspired by personal experience, nature, history, the occult and the divine feminine in us all. Telling stories through symbols and symmetrical iconic compositions often using the language of flowers and animals. These images all have personal meaning but also allow the viewer to have their own interpretation of these broad subjects. Nature is a universal language that has inspired endless creation. In days of old, images of a certain flower or familiar scene had a wealth of meaning to the viewer. A lily signifying peace; a lamb, innocence; a snake, betrayal. Embroidered on garments and accessories these secret meanings could convey messages without a word. Intricate patterns told stories of love, loss, betrayal or victory.
“My work attempts to recapture some of this mystery in a more modern illustrative style. I create thread paintings using these forgotten definitions of flora and fauna to tell my own stories, secrets and messages.”
Most recently Samantha was accepted into the Society for Embroidered Work, a juried association dedicated to promoting and supporting the best in stitched art worldwide. You can view members and their work here.
She currently works for the US Government as a Presidential Flag Embroiderer, takes selective commissions and lives in Philadelphia with her husband and cat management team Mel and Mulberry.
